The Mid-Summer Southwest Fun Run

Hi folks,
As mentioned in the July edition of OVERDRIVE, Dave and Elaine have mapped out an interesting drive for us this coming Saturday (July 22). Rain date is Sunday July 23. They will hand out maps and some questions we are to answer during the drive to keep us alert. There will be a prize awarded to the driver of the car with the most correct answers. Bring a picnic lunch and your swimming trunks (if you want to swim at Charleston Lake).
Here are a few more details from Dave and Elaine directly. Hope to see lots of folks out this weekend.

The Mid-Summer Southwest Fun Run

Meet between 9:00 and 10:00 am for breakfast or a coffee at the Rideau Family Restaurant (7780 Ottawa Road 5; 0.9 miles south of Rideau Provincial Park just before the bridge over the Rideau River).
The run starts at 10:00. and will proceed more or less southwest for approx 100km (62 miles) which includes a side trip to the cheese factory at Forfar for a cold drink, an ice cream cone or some fresh curd. The run will end at the Leeds and Grenville County Park on Charleston Lake for a picnic lunch at noon. The park has ample parking, is a lovely spot for a leisurely lunch overlooking the lake and there is a beach for swimming or paddling if any one is so inclined.

The run will continue after lunch by a different route to Merrickville where people will be able to stop and shop, have a cold one, or stay for dinner. This is the end of the "official" run and drivers can make their way home as the mood strikes them.

Hope it's a good day

Dave & Elaine

UPDATE DIRECTIONS

Hi folks,
Further to my email below, I spoke to the restaurant and have the following information on how to find them. The map below is a pretty good indication of where they are, EXCEPT the red star is in the wrong place!!!
Instructions from the restaurant folks as follows:
1. Heading south on 416, take the Dilworth exit
2. At end of off ramp, turn right.
3. At stop sign, turn left onto "Old Highway 16"
4. Follow this road along, it goes straight for a while, then some bends, and goes past the provincial park (now you're on the map below)
5. Follow the road as it sweeps left after the provincial park. The restaurant is after the park, on the RIGHT hand side, and BEFORE the bridge.
Hopefully this is enough to get us to the starting point. If you're planning to have breakfast at the restaurant, aim to be there closer to 9:00 ish. If you're just planning to arrive in time for the staging of the start of the drive, then aim to be there closer to 10:00. Dave and Elaine have mapped out the route from there, and will be handing out the details and the questions for the drive.
Estimated travel time from Ottawa to the restaurant is about 30-40 minutes, so make sure you leave enough time. I'll have my cell with me, but don't know how good the coverage is out there. The number is (613) 596-5692

Hi folks,

I've had a few questions about the location of the restaurant identified as our starting point. I did some searching on Google and came up with the following:

Rideau Restaurant
7780 Beckett's Landing Road
Kemptville, ON
K0G 1J0

Telephone: (613) 258-1456

I was unable to find a Rideau Restaurant or an Ottawa Street in Kemptville with Google, but there was a Rideau Restaurant in Kemptville at the same street number but a different street name than was originally indicated. Note that there are 2 roads marked on the map as Beckett's Landing Road, so there is still some confusion here. Unless Dave is able to send out something this morning, I will call them when I get into the office and see if we can confirm the details.
