2017 VTR National Convention, Princeton, NJ
by Bob Thomas
This year, the Vintage Triumph Register National Convention was co hosted by the New Jersey Triumph Association and the Delaware Valley Triumph Club at the Westin Forrestal Village Hotel in Princeton, New Jersey from 16 to 19 August.
David and Lynda Huddleson along with Bob Thomas and Fran Wright headed out for Princeton in two TR8s on Monday 14 August, crossing into the US at Ogdensburg and travelling on secondary highways down to Hancock, NY where we spent the night. Tuesday saw us travel along Rte 97 (which is the Delaware Scenic Byway and well worth seeing) into New Jersey and then onto US 206 to Princeton.
Wednesday started with registration, and kicked off 4 days of Rallys, Tech Sessions, Auto Cross, Scenic Drives and Car Shows culminating in the Awards Banquet Saturday night. Among our favourite events were a breakfast buffet at a restaurant where we remained seated and the food came to us; a visit to a "Garage Club" where members could work on and store their cars as well as relax in a lounge complete with a slot car track; and most memorable, was a visit by bus to the Simeone Museum in Philadelphia, it's definitely on the bucket list for any "gear head".
Sunday David and Lynda toured New York City while Bob and Fran relaxed by the pool, and on Monday we all drove to the Jersey Shore to enjoy the beach on our last day in the area.
Tuesday we left for home travelling up the Interstate highways until just into New York State where we got on a series of paved secondary roads with lots of curves that took us to Amsterdam, NY for the night just before a series of thunderstorms hit.
Wednesday was a beautiful day for the final leg of our trip home through the Adirondack Mountains to Tupper Lake for lunch and on to Ogdensburg where we crossed back into Canada and arrived at home after 7 days and 1200 miles of travel. The only negative aspect of the trip was the hot weather (85-90F everyday) in Princeton and that was beyond anyone's control.
Looking back, the most surprising moment of the trip was when a young Amish man with a team of horses and a wagon gave us a "thumbs up" near Huvelton, NY when we met him on the road. Who knew the Amish like little British sports cars!
Congratulations to the organizers and volunteers who made the 2017 Convention such a successful and enjoyable event. For anyone looking forward to next year's VTR Convention, it's in La Crosse, Wisconsin, 17-21 July 2018, and it's only 1000 miles from here!
